Satellite television is the transmission of
broadcast signals through artificial
communications satellites, mainly positioned
in geostationary orbit, satellites have been
used since the 1960s to relay television
pictures and sound all around the world.
Higher powered satellites have more recently
been developed to broadcast signals to cable
systems or directly to people's homes.
Direct satallite broadcasting began in the
UK in February 1989 with the introduction of
Rupert Murdoch's Sky Television service, its
rival British Satellite Broadcasting or BSB
was launched in April 1990, and they merged
in November that same year to form British
Sky Broadcasting. The advent of satellite and
cable television has given viewers better
choice, with such programs "The Simpsons",
"The X-Files", and hundreds of premier films.
