  1. Satellite television is the transmission of 
  2. broadcast signals through artificial 
  3. communications satellites, mainly positioned
  4. in geostationary orbit, satellites have been
  5. used since the 1960s to relay television 
  6. pictures and sound all around the world.
  7. Higher powered satellites have more recently
  8. been developed to broadcast signals to cable
  9. systems or directly to people's homes.
  10. Direct satallite broadcasting began in the
  11. UK in February 1989 with the introduction of
  12. Rupert Murdoch's Sky Television service, its
  13. rival British Satellite Broadcasting or BSB 
  14. was launched in April 1990, and they merged
  15. in November that same year to form British
  16. Sky Broadcasting. The advent of satellite and
  17. cable television has given viewers better
  18. choice, with such programs "The Simpsons",
  19. "The X-Files", and hundreds of premier films.
